Kathryn Freeman joins my Christmas Countdown!

Next up on my Christmas countdown is Choc Lit author, Kathryn Freeman, with her feel-good festive read, A Little Christmas Faith

Welcome to my blog Kathryn, I have read A Little Christmas Faith, but for those who haven’t, how will your characters be spending Christmas?

The characters in A Little Christmas Faith celebrate the festive day in a seventeenth century mill in the Lake District – lovingly converted into a boutique hotel; The Old Mill hotel. What happens on the day does bear some resemblance to my own Christmas. There is a real tree (though Faith, owner of the hotel, has managed to cram a ten foot Normandy fir into her hallway), presents, turkeys, family … and most definitely chaos. Where it differs from mine, is the very heavy sprinkling of romance. (Then again, one year my husband did give me a life size cardboard cutout of Jenson Button.)

Check out the photographic evidence of Kathryn’s favourite Christmas gift below 😉 But first here’s a bit more about A Little Christmas Faith, starting with the blurb:

Is it time to love Christmas again?

Faith Watkins loves Christmas, which is why she’s thrilled that her new hotel in the Lake District will be open in time for the festive season. And Faith has gone all out; huge Christmas tree, fairy lights, an entire family of decorative reindeer. Now all she needs are the guests …

But what she didn’t bank on was her first paying customer being someone like Adam Hunter. Rugged, powerfully built and with a deep sadness in his eyes, Adam is a man that Faith is immediately drawn to – but unfortunately he also has an intense hatred of all things Christmassy.

As the countdown to the big day begins, Faith can’t seem to keep away from her mysterious guest, but still finds herself with more questions than answers: just what happened to Adam Hunter? And why does he hate Christmas?

And as I’ve had the pleasure of reading the book, here’s my review:

“A fabulous, feel-good festive read that will leave you with that all important fuzzy feeling! Likeable characters come together in this delightful Christmas story of love, hope and new beginnings. Adam Hunter is a great male lead, perfect to snuggle up with over Christmas.”

So with your character’s Christmas all sorted, how do you plan to celebrate Christmas this year?

Christmas chez Freeman is a family affair; children, nieces, grandparents. Sometimes we’re at home, sometimes in Somerset. Always there are daft presents (mixed with a couple of serious ones), champagne, crackers, a huge turkey (if at mine, read over done turkey), the Queen’s speech, a real tree (if at my brother’s, read more trees than Santa’s grotto), a film everyone can watch (and will fall asleep during), and chaos. We also try and drag everyone out for a walk, and always receive an enthusiastic response from the teenage generation (‘do we have to?’).

Oh I do love a big family Christmas, it sounds great! Before you go, I must also ask you to answer five questions from my Christmas selection:

Christmas jumper or posh frock? I start out trying to be posh, but end the day in tracksuit bottoms with plenty of waistband give.

Real or artificial Christmas tree? Real, for the smell, for the look and for the memories as it’s what we always had when I was a child. Sweeping up pine needles is just part of the whole Christmas experience.

Best Christmas gift? That would have to be Jenson of course!

Worst Christmas gift? In the early years of our marriage, my husband gave me a food processor. I can only say it must be love, or we’d never have made it to the next Christmas. He did learn from his mistake, see above 😉

Sprouts or no sprouts? Sprouts, because how can you have Christmas without them? I don’t actually like the things, but I can blame my parents for that, because apparently whether they taste bitter or not to you is all in the genes.

Wow, I never knew that about sprouts but I am claiming that for my excuse now too.

Thank you so much for joining in with my Christmas countdown and I wish you and your family a happy (and joyously hectic) Christmas. xx

About the author:

Kathryn says: A former pharmacist, I’m now a medical writer who also writes romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero.

With two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to buy a card (yes, he does), any romance is all in my head. Then again, his unstinting support of my career change proves love isn’t always about hearts and flowers – and heroes come in many disguises.”

Author Kathryn Freeman is #SharingTheLove

As February is the month of love, I have a host of wonderful romance authors stopping by my blog to share flirty extracts from their novels! Well you know, any excuse 😉

Today, I am delighted to welcome Kathryn Freeman who is #SharingTheLove with an extract from her novel, Oh Crumbs … over to you Kathryn!

Oh Crumbs

“As silence descended, Abby stared at the flourishing tulips in her beloved pots, for once at a loss how to put into words the emotion churning inside her.

‘You were incredible,’ she told Doug finally. ‘Thank you.’

He shrugged and she thought he was going to say nothing, but then he gave her a small, slightly bemused smile. ‘First time I’ve been called incredible.’

A hot blush stung her cheeks, the heat spreading rapidly through her body as his eyes flickered down to her lips before coming back up to hold hers. He’s going to kiss me. Her heart hammered wildly and she prayed she wouldn’t say anything stupid to muck up this moment. ‘I’m glad I was the first to tell you. Are you some sort of ninja?’

He let out a soft laugh. ‘I’m a brown belt in BJJ. Brazilian jiu-jitsu,’ he added at her puzzled look.

‘I’ve heard of a Brazilian, but I’m pretty sure the one I’m thinking of wouldn’t take out two men.’ Bugger, bugger, talk about a mood crusher … then again, maybe she was okay because a full-blown smile slid across his face, bathing her in its warmth.

‘You’d be surprised how easily us men can be floored.’ All the smoothness had vanished from his voice; it sounded hoarser, deeper.

Her heart accelerated into overdrive, thumping so hard she felt her chest vibrate. Was he talking generally, or was this about him? Being floored by her?

He took the one step he needed to be right beside her and suddenly she could no longer think. As his head dipped the air left her lungs and when she inhaled again there was only him. Filling her senses, making her body tingle, drugging her mind with his strong, quiet presence.

The touch of his lips against hers was tentative, as if asking a question, seeking permission. She answered fully, parting her mouth and leaning in so it wasn’t just their lips touching but their bodies, too. Instantly his hands flew to cradle her face and the kiss grew hungrier. He nibbled at her lips, driving her crazy before sweeping his tongue into her mouth. She was lost.”

Thank you for sharing your wonderful extract Kathryn, I’ve had the pleasure of reading Oh Crumbs and I am happy to share my review:

This was the second book by Kathryn Freeman I have read, and it didn’t disappoint. The characters were likeable, and I enjoyed the warmth and chaos of the Spencer household. I liked the development of the relationship between the two lead characters particularly as they faced the issues brought about by being together. Oh Crumbs was an enjoyable read, and with a title like that, what better excuse to snuggle up for a few hours reading with a hot drink and a biscuit or six!

Discover more about Oh Crumbs:

Sometimes life just takes the biscuit …
Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that. Though she sacrificed her career to help raise her sisters, a job interview at biscuit company Crumbs could finally be her chance to shine. That’s until she hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby nephew, and trips over her handbag.

Managing director Douglas Faulkner isn’t sure what to make of Abby Spencer with her Bambi eyes, tousled hair and ability to say more in the half-hour interview than he manages in a day. All he knows is she’s a breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her.

But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks he is.

About the author:

Kathryn started her working life as a retail pharmacist but soon realised trying to decipher doctors’ handwriting wasn’t for her. Next she joined the pharmaceutical industry where she spent twenty happy years working in medical communications, doing a lot of writing – about medicines. What she really wanted to write about though, was romance.

In 2011, backed by her family, she left the world of pharmaceutical science to begin life as a self employed writer, juggling the two disciplines of medical writing and romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero…

She lives with two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to bother buying a card again this year (yes, he does) so the romance in her life is all in her head. Then again, her husband’s unstinting support of her career change goes to prove that love isn’t always about hearts and flowers – and heroes can come in many disguises.

Book Boyfriend Blind Date 1

Looking for a blind date that won’t disappoint, this Valentine’s Day? Then look no further, as I have been doing a little research for you (honestly, it was entirely selfless) and I have discovered some wonderful book boyfriend, blind date prospects. In fact I have discovered so many, I am sharing them over two posts!

I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed watching my inbox fill up since I asked the lovely authors from Choc Lit and Ruby Fiction to answer these two, all important questions:

If I went on a blind date with the hero from your book, how would I recognise him and where would he take me?

Reading their answers, I felt like I had joined the most wonderful, and diverse, online dating agency! So get a drink, sit back and enjoy, as you join me, in considering which of these heroes you would choose from book boyfriend blind date round one:

Jack Penhale from The Thief’s Daughter by Victoria Cornwall

On your date, you would recognise Jack because he would be wearing a tricorn hat (like Ross Poldark) and leading a horse. For the date, he would take you for a horse ride along the North Cornish Coast, finally ending up in a secluded cove. There you will stroll, barefoot, along the water’s edge together and have a kiss or two … or three.

Harry Dixon from The Girl on the Beach by Morton S. Gray

You would recognise Harry by his huge brown eyes, short dark hair, just enough stubble and a cleft in his chin. He runs a lot, usually on the beach, so he has a well-toned body. For a blind date, he would take you to the wine bar near to the beach and the promenade in Borteen, the setting for the novel. He’d wear soft faded denim jeans and a dark blue shirt. He doesn’t drink alcohol due to events in his past, so he’d have orange juice but would order a good bottle of Chardonnay for you. He’d aim to get the seats near to the window of the wine bar so that you could both watch the light change over the bay as the sun went down.

Alex Aldrich from Watch for me by Moonlight by Kirsty Ferry

You’d recognise Alex by the haunted look in his eyes, a result of the fact he was actually yearning for his childhood sweetheart, Elodie Bright. He’s very handsome; tall, dark and has amazing cheekbones. But he’s got a few demons knocking around so don’t be surprised if he’s a bit quiet and doesn’t really give you his full attention. He’s got a lot on his mind – mainly how he can get Elodie back, as she’s just returned to the village after a messy divorce and a long absence. You’re his rebound. It’ll never work – sorry, but I think it’s best that you know in advance!

He’s pretty committed to pulling his old family estate around after his dad drove it to the brink of bankruptcy. He might not want to go too far afield as he’s got a million and one things to sort out at Hartsford Hall, but, if you catch him on a good day, he might take you to the West End. But again, that’s probably because he’s hoping he’ll bump into Elodie as she works as a costume designer in the London theatres…

Aiden Foster from Before You by Kathryn Freeman

With his dark hair, striking grey eyes and ridiculously handsome face it would be hard not to notice Aiden Foster. Then again, you wouldn’t need to, because this ladies’ man would notice you. Depending on where in the world he was working – he’s a Formula 1 driver – he might take you to his yacht in Monte Carlo, or perhaps the Ritz-Carlton in Singapore. Then again, he might just take you for a meal in his luxury trailer. That’s if he’s got ten-year-old Tom staying with him…

Daniel from Angela Barton’s Ruby Fiction debut

Daniel is an artist. He’ll be the man waiting a little self consciously while scratching a couple of paint splashes from his watch face. You’re meeting by the crackling log fire in the village restaurant; a table for two booked an hour later. Daniel’s tall and slim, his hair and eyes are conker-brown, but it’ll only be when you’re close enough to speak with him that you’ll notice the amber flecks in brown eyes and the fine laughter lines fanning from them. You’ll discover that you’re breathing a little faster – he’s gorgeous after all! He’ll smell of spice and citrus, and you’ll be thanking your lucky stars that you agreed to meet him.

Jake from Hannah Pearl’s Ruby Fiction debut

Jake, would probably invite you over for dinner because he would be looking after his sister and his niece. You would recognise him because he would be the one trying not to set the kitchen on fire!

So many lovely, interesting and intriguing prospects, but the good thing about picking a book boyfriend is, you don’t have to choose just one … Happy choosing, and don’t miss Book Boyfriend Blind Date 2, coming soon!
